EDC Develops Special Issue of Journal of Science Education and Technology

The new issue of Journal of Science Education and Technology, “Stories from ITEST: Inspiring Young People to Pursue STEM Careers,” Caroline Parkerspotlights findings from the trailblazing STEM education and workforce development efforts of National Science Foundation-funded Innovative Technology Experiences for Students and Teachers (ITEST) projects. Caroline Parker (at right), an EDC Principal Research Scientist and co-Principal Investigator of the STEM Learning and Research Center (STELAR), served as lead editor of the special issue, which features 16 articles spotlighting ITEST projects that are engaging children and youth in robotics, game design, and other “real-world” STEM learning. Parker also co-authored the introduction to the issue (“Innovations and Challenges in Project-Based Learning”) and EDC Managing Project Director Joyce Malyn-Smith co-authored the article “Workforce Education Models for K–12 Education." 

For 13 years, through STELAR and the previous ITEST Learning Resource Center, EDC has helped ITEST projects advance their goals to improve PreK–12 STEM learning in and outside of schools, spark students’ interest in STEM, and inspire students to pursue STEM careers—especially students from groups that are underrepresented in the current STEM workforce. To date, EDC and the ITEST program have supported and shared the findings from 326 ITEST R&D projects reaching 415,900 youth, 12,800 educators, and 5,100 parents and caregivers across 46 states and the District of Columbia.

“ITEST projects are making significant contributions to the national body of knowledge about strategies, successes, models, and interventions that support and encourage youth to pursue STEM careers,” Parker said. “These 16 articles will be of great interest to educators, project designers, researchers, workforce development professionals, and policymakers nationwide.”
