What does it mean to be data literate in the world of “big data”? What should we be teaching students to better prepare them to participate in today’s workforce and society? What steps need to be taken to develop critical data literacy skills in schools? This report captures key takeaways from a 3-day workshop, Building Global Interest in Data Literacy: A Dialogue, held by ODI and IBM in October 2015. During the workshop, big data analysts and education experts came together to engage in a structured dialogue that produced new insights into the nature of data literacy in today’s big data society, the skills and knowledge that a data-literate person must possess, the meaning and role of analytical thinking, and how we might foster analytical thinking and data literacy in K–16 classrooms.
