Symposium Kicks Off to Study Math and Science Teacher Leadership

This article spotlights a three-day National Science Foundation-funded Math/Science Teacher Leadership Symposium presented by EDC, Biological Sciences Curriculum Study, and the Knowles Science Teaching Foundation that convened leaders in math and science education and teacher leadership from across the nation: "The symposium is being held to identify and convey the key features of high-quality mathematics and science teacher leadership programs, in an effort to decrease fragmentation across mathematics and science education. The event will help develop recommendations for future practice and research in teacher leadership."

From 11:10 to 12:30, Babette Moeller will co-present the session, "Facilitating Teacher-to-Teacher Learning" at the 2016 100Kin10 Summit at the Space Center Houston. EDC is a member of 100Kin10, a coalition of organizations that is working to prepare 100,000 new STEM teachers so that "our country can remain a nation of innovators, dreamers, and problem-solvers."

Visualizing Oceans of Data: Ocean Tracks - A Case Study

In 2013, EDC's Oceans of Data Institute team published Visualizing Oceans of Data, which communicated the findings of a two-year NSF-funded study (Ocean Tracks) that gathered knowledge relevant to the design of educational interfaces to large online scientific data sets. Because the online availability of large scientific data sets is still a relatively recent and rapidly growing phenomenon, the authors knew there was still much to learn and report on.

This case study features the guidelines that emerged as the most relevant and important to engaging students with the Ocean Tracks data and curriculum
