Join EDC at the 2017 National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics Annual Conference (April 3-5), National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Research Conference (April 3-5), and National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Annual Meeting (April 5-8). This year, our staff will present sessions on preparing all students for success in Algebra, providing effective professional development for math teachers, using technology to enhance early math learning and teaching, and promoting the proficiency of diverse learners. Just a few highlights appear below, followed by our full schedule of sessions. We look forward to seeing you in San Antonio!
- New Book from Heinemann: On April 4 at NCSM, Deborah Schifter and her co-authors will lead a session, "Mathematical Argument in the Elementary Classroom: A Model for Teachers and Coaches," based on their new Heinemann book: But Why Does It Work? Mathematical Argument in the Elementary Classroom. Please come to Heinemann Booth #309 at NCSM to view the new book, and visit the Houghton Mifflin Harcourt/Heinemann Booth #1024 at NCTM to purchase a copy!
- All-Day NCTM Workshop: On April 5, Johannah Nikula and Harold Asturias will present an all-day workshop, "Linking Language and Learning Mathematics," that will provide teachers with easy to use, high leverage strategies for helping students, particularly English learners, access the language and mathematics of word problems by linking language and reasoning development.
- NCTM "Meet the Authors" Event: On April 6 (8:00-9:15 a.m.), Pam Buffington, Shannon Larson, and Kelly McCormick will lead a Round Table discussion of their chapter, "A Collaborative Approach to Strengthening K-2 Mathematical Practices with Technology," that appears in the new Annual Perspectives In Mathematics (APME) volume Reflective and Collaborative Processes to Improve Mathematics Teaching.
- Effective New PD Model: On April 3 at NCSM, Deborah Spencer, Johannah Nikula, and June Mark will share findings from their work designing and testing a new EDC professional development model in the session: "Professional Development That Immerses Teachers in the Standards for Mathematical Practice." Materials related to this PD model will be published by NCTM late in 2017.
