EDC and Providence Public Schools: A Strategic Researcher-Practitioner Partnership

A grant from the U.S. Department of Education’s Institute of Education Sciences (IES) is supporting EDC and the Providence Public School District (PPSD) in carrying out a researcher-practitioner partnership to improve achievement among students who are members of underrepresented groups—with an initial focus on the district’s English language learners. As part of the collaboration, a team led by EDC PI Julie Riordan (at left) and PPSD PI Marco Andrade are convening a consortium of organizations in Providence and Rhode Island—institutions of higher education, foundations, community organizations—that can help advance the partnership’s research agenda and goals.

The team is also conducting initial analyses to help PPSD meet its goals to understand patterns of achievement among its large population of English learners and identify aspects of programs that support English learners as a way to improve their learning outcomes. Riordan commented, “This is an exciting opportunity to promote and support research in Providence, a district that is well-positioned to use findings from research in decisions about policies and programs.” Andrade noted, “This grant is allowing us to partner with EDC on a joint research effort focused on our ELL students and  services. I expect that what we learn from this effort will be used to improve students’ experiences and will, in the process, build a longer term research agenda for the district.”
