The American Alliance of Museums has recognized EDC’s work with the Arkansas-based Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art with a Gold MUSE Award for outstanding achievement. A May 19 EDC press release announces that the award was presented for Museum Mash Up: American Identity through the Arts, a multimedia online course developed by a team led by Anne Kraybill, Crystal Bridges' Director of Education and Kirsten Peterson (at left), Director of EDC's EdTech Leaders Online program.
Blending art and history exploration, Museum Mash-Up immerses students in thinking about what artists were going through at the time they created their work, engages them in examining the impact of identity, conflict, and environment on art, and helps them connect what they learn to their own life and world. The course has a special focus on building students' writing skills and critical thinking skills. In a blog post published on Art Museum Teaching ("Museums and Online Learning: A Student's Perspective"), course participant Maddy Windel wrote, "It’s thrilling to be able to look back and acknowledge, even early on, a conscious change in understanding from taking a course like this, and I hope that feeling is one many students can experience in the future through online interactions and in-person visits to museums such as Crystal Bridges that offer these educational opportunities."
