In March, the Regional Educational Laboratory Northeast and Islands (REL-NEI) Governing Board convened in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Newly seated Puerto Rico Secretary of Education Rafael Román Meléndez welcomed the Board and delivered a keynote address with a special emphasis on dropout prevention. Meléndez was followed by representatives from Puerto Rico’s New Barbosa School, a turnaround school, who reflected on the difficult challenges of school transformation in the face of high student dropout rates.
REL-NEI staff, including Jill Weber (pictured at left) and Leslie Hergert, engaged the Board in discussing opportunities and challenges for the REL-NEI’s eight research alliances. The Board also engaged in strategic planning to advance its emerging research focus on low-performing schools.
