New K–2 PD Program Supports Math Success for All Students

EDC to Refine and Test CT-E STEM Career Workshop Model

What does it mean to be a “computational thinking enabled” (CT-E) science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) professional? Working closely with STEM industry professionals, Joyce Malyn-Smith and Joseph Ippolito developed a profile that describes the work tasks CT-E STEM professionals perform every day—illustrating what they must know and be able to do. New funding from the National Science Foundation's Office of Cyberinfrastructure will enable Malyn-Smith and Ippolito to take this work to the next level.

In a new initiative supported by The Wallace Foundation, a team led by Dr. Cheryl King will develop, pilot, and field-test a tool and protocols to assess the effectiveness of partnerships between districts and university principal preparation programs. The tool and protocols can play a key role in fostering the “great leaders” called for by Race to the Top by leveraging the capacity of districts and universities to align program elements and resources and pursue a shared vision for preparing “great leaders.”

EDC and Partners Build “Research+Practice Collaboratory”

EDC with lead partner the Exploratorium and the University of Washington, the University of Colorado-Boulder, Inverness Research Associates, and TERC has received a National Science Foundation grant to build a new “Research and Practice (R&P) Collaboratory.” The partners, working with leading professional associations and science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) improvement efforts, will leverage existing, collective knowledge and experience to respond to national concerns about the gap between research and practice in K–12 STEM education.
