Documenting Opportunities for Students to Meet New Challenges: Understanding the Alignment Between the ISIOP and the NGSS

This paper presents findings from the authors' analysis of the degree to which the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and EDC's Inquiring Into Science Instruction Observation Protocol (ISIOP) are aligned. Developed by EDC researchers based on a comprehensive literature review, as well as current understandings regarding best practices and inquiry science instruction, the ISIOP assists evaluators and researchers in determining the extent to which quality pedagogical practices and instruction about scientific inquiry are present in secondary science teaching. In their analysis, the authors sought to identify ways in which researchers can use ISIOP constructs and indicators to document the extent to which teachers' practices reflects the NGSS standards.
