Education Week Commentary: For Science Standards, Begin at the Beginning

Full Description:

In this Education Week Commentary, the authors suggest that the wisest strategy to ensure effective implementation of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) is to phase the standards in slowly, starting with a school's earliest grade (kindergarten or 1st grade) and continuing the implementation in an "upward wave." Adding one new grade per year, they assert, will benefit students by gradually building, and building upon, prior knowledge. The approach will also give schools and districts sufficient time to adapt to the NGSS and provide teachers with the professional development and support they need to align instruction with the standards and support students' success.
