Innovative Professional Development for STEM Workforce Development

In this editorial published in the Contemporary Issues in Technology and Teacher Education Journal, the author provides an overview of best practices for conducting effective professional development identified by researchers and teacher educators in the STEM fields. She notes that projects funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) Innovative Technology Experiences for Students and Teachers (ITEST) program incorporate many of these characteristics, as well as featuring three innovative components common to ITEST projects:

  1. Interweaving of formal and informal learning environments
  2. Engagement with hands-on, deep STEM content areas
  3. Commitment to improving the quality of research on the impact of the projects on participants
