Miller and Krumhansl contributed this chapter to Reforming Secondary Science Instruction edited by Julie Gess-Newsome, Julie Luft, and Randy L. Bell. Most science educators believe that innovative instructional materials can transform the way science is taught. However, change is dependent on how the materials are designed and how teachers use them. This chapter explores the interplay between the intended implementation of designed, innovative curriculum and the curriculum enacted by teachers who are used to customizing their own instructional materials.
