Project Strategies to Engage Underrepresented Populations

Full Description:

This STELAR Data Brief describes NSF's Innovative Technology Experiences for Students and Teachers (ITEST) program's focus on engaging underrepresented youth populations in its funded projects. In a 2012 Data Brief, 70% of responding ITEST projects in the 2011-12 school year targeted African-American and Hispanic students as well as students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch. This Data Brief builds on the 2012 one by discussing how ITEST projects succeed in this engagement. Some of the strategies used over the past year to broaden the participation of underrepresented populations included targeted recruitment, increased cultural competence, strategic partnerships, and active marketing.
