Supporting English Learners: Lessons Learned from Research

In this article published in Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School, the authors provide a detailed description of a lesson that helps teachers engage English learners in mathematical thinking that is aligned with the eight Standards for Mathematical Practice (SMP) found in the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics. The lesson was designed with attention to three instructional principles known to benefit ELLs—engage students with challenging mathematical tasks, develop academic language, and encourage multiple modes of communication—and was used in the authors' research study, Fostering Mathematical Success of English Language Learners (FMSELL).
