This article, published in The Science Teacher, is aimed at teachers already experienced with activities involving small, student-collected data sets and who are now ready to being working with large, online data sets collected by scientists and engineers. Such data, now accessible to science teachers and students, are often of a quality and quantity previously seen only at research institutions. With teachers’ guidanceplus online data and their newly acquired big data skills, students can find evidence for ideas that, in the past, they would have had to accept based on their teachers’ or textbooks’ perspectives. The article offers numerous resources and class activities, both Web and print based, to help teachers with this transition.
