An EDC team is advancing the goals of Why News Matters, an important initiative launched by Robert R. McCormick Foundation. Why News Matters is designed to enhance news literacy programs in Chicago to ensure citizens acquire the skills they need to judge the reliability and credibility of news reports and information sources. For the next two years, Tony Streit, Deidre Searcy, Gabriela Silva, and Erin Stafford will support grantees from community-based and educational settings with varying degrees of expertise in journalism and media.

Searcy says, “We are thrilled to contribute to this timely new effort. Today, people of all ages are bombarded with information. Why News Matters will offer fresh insights into how we can foster news literacy—help people separate fact from fiction—in ways that are effective, compelling, and have a lasting impact.” The team will support grantees'  planning and evaluation efforts, engage grantees in a community of practice focused on initiative goals, facilitate affinity groups, provide resources and trainings, and capture lessons learned.
