EDC’s Zoom In—a free, Web-based platform that helps students build literacy and historical thinking skills through “deep dives” into primary and secondary sources—won an Honorable Mention in the 2015 Digital Innovation in Learning Awards (DILA) competition sponsored by EdSurge and Digital Promise. Out of 400 entrants from the U.S. and 39 countries, only 16 winners and a handful of Honorable Mention awardees were selected: Zoom In is 1 of 3 honored in the “Mindful Data” category.
Designed by a team led by Bill Tally (at left), Zoom In complements the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts, which emphasize the building of literacy skills across disciplines. The tool's 16 engaging lessons focus on key events in six National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) historical periods and support students' close reading and evidence-based writing. Zoom In also helps teachers monitor students' learning, assess students' progress, and fine-tune instruction to deepen students' understanding (read an article and Teaching Channel blog post about Zoom In).
