On August 24 to 26, EDC joined its partners, the National Career Academy Coalition, University of Florida Lastinger Center, and School Reform Initiative, in Miami, Florida in launching a new, year-long Fellowship—the Career Academy Leaders Collaborative (CALC)—for career academy educators from across the United States. The four organizations, all national leaders in college and career preparation innovation, have co-designed and are delivering this powerful new professional learning opportunity.
Over the three days, EDC facilitator Jessica Juliuson (at left) and co-facilitators engaged 30 participants in experiences designed to develop their adaptive leadership capacity, build knowledge, and enhance skills to create and enact transformative ideas that empower their community. “We are happy to welcome Career Academy Leaders to our Certified Communities of Practice Facilitator program,” said Phil Poekert, Assistant Director of the Lastinger Center. “This program assists Leaders in creating safe spaces in which to think about and design better teaching practices, to look closely at educator and student work, and to identify schoolwide issues that affect student achievement.”
The fellowship, built on in-person and virtual collaborative experiences, uses the National Standards of Practice for Career Academies (NSOP) as a framework. Academy Leader Fellows work as a cohort and build their expertise in design thinking, consensus building, strategic planning, change management, coaching, and facilitation.
This holistic view of leadership is echoed in statements from this year’s Fellows: “Leaders of career academies must continually monitor progress, inspire, connect, and support all stakeholders in their efforts to ensure future success of our students,” said one Fellow, while another observed, “Leadership is a balancing act between so many stakeholders who have a vested interest in student achievement.”
It is expected that a new group of thirty Fellows will be selected each year, adding to the knowledge network for career academies.
