Research & Evaluation

Educators need rigorous research and evaluation to guide their actions as they enhance practice, improve schools, and determine the future direction of programs. Drawing upon our expertise in the full range of research methods—from randomized controlled trials and implementation studies to case studies and secondary data analysis—we tailor our research designs to illuminate the critical questions at hand, using the appropriate methodology to address research questions. EDC’s approach is to learn what works, why it works, and under what conditions, so that we may most effectively address educators’ high-priority questions and respond to the needs of our funding partners. Nationwide, our findings are advancing the field’s knowledge of effective education practices, programs, and systems.

Collaborative Research

We carry out rigorous basic and applied research in formal and informal settings, working in partnership with leaders at the school, district, state, and national levels to answer critical questions of policy and ground education practice with evidence to improve outcomes for all students. Our deep understanding of subject area content and pedagogy as well as the contexts in which schools operate informs how we frame questions, design research plans, recruit participants, collect and analyze data, and present findings. With results in hand, we work with the client to determine how to make the best use of results and disseminate findings broadly to advance the field. Featured projects:

Rigorous and Responsive Program Evaluation

Given the demands for evidence to demonstrate the effectiveness of program interventions, federal, state, and foundation clients turn to EDC to provide data on the quality and merit of programs, curricula, and resources to help them meet accountability expectations and determine future directions. We design and implement evaluations intended to improve instruction, advance teachers’ professional growth, and enhance student achievement. We provide recommendations, and we engage clients in making meaningful use of findings to meet their goals. Featured projects:

Research Findings for Policymakers

In support of policymakers who need to make decisions in the face of multiple challenges—from achievement gaps and accountability to teacher credentialing and budget cuts—we advance knowledge and frame research findings for maximum impact. We conduct a wide range of studies, including RCTs, that serve to identify effective strategies to strengthen education systems and improve outcomes for children and youth. Our testimony and policy papers help inform state and federal agencies about emerging issues. Featured projects:

Instructional Design Research

Our researchers provide new insights into effective instructional design, help guide the development of innovative resources, and identify strategies to support educators in improving students' outcomes. A robust strand of our research focuses on investigating technology-infused programs and interventions to determine their effectiveness and possible role in enriching instruction, deepening student understanding, and improving student achievement. Findings from our instructional design research have important implications for national education policy and practice. Featured projects:
