Digital Badges for Teacher Mastery: An Exploratory Study of a Competency-Based Professional Development Badge System

The authors of this study set out to look at how the use of a digital badge system to acknowledge in-service history and social studies teachers’ achievements in ongoing professional development supported or hindered their progress toward mastery of a new set of practices. What is unique to the PD program used in this study is that each digital badge earned by participants was part of a larger learning system through which teachers could continue to build their knowledge of content and instructional practices. While teachers did find some benefit to the earning of badges, researchers and participants alike experienced a number of challenges, covered in this article through discussion and recommendations.
