This paper describes the "mathematical habits of mind"—ways of thinking, mental habits, and reserch techniques that mathematicians draw on—that form the core of EDC's Mathematical Practice Institute's approach to developing mathematics curriculum. As a result of this paper, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics' “Contemporary Curriculum Issues” series commissioned three papers by the authors that were published in the journals Teaching Children Mathematics, Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School, and Mathematics Teacher.
