In this chapter published in the Summer 2013 issue of Career Planning and Adult Development Journal, the authors discuss two new jobs that require strong science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) skills and knowledge whose creation was driven by technological change: Mecomtronics Technician and Health IT Specialists. They follow this discussion with examples of research on skills that are needed to succeed in the 21st century workplaces and suggested activities to help career professionals better understand the skill requirements of the new STEM workforce.
