Participatory Professional Development: Geospatially Enhanced Urban Ecological Field Studies

Full Description:

This chapter is published in the book Teaching Science and Investigating Environmental Issues with Geospatial Technology: Designing Effective Professional Development for Teachers (Springer Netherlands). The authors describe findings from their development of the Urban Ecology Institute—a summer secondary science teacher training program to assist teachers who are introducing their students to the field of urban ecology. They found that geospatial technologies (e.g., GoogleEarth, geographic information systems) and computational modeling tools were a powerful way to support teachers and students in critically examining their own neighborhoods
